A 1-day workshop covering:

Introduction and brief overview of traditional and contemporary shadow theatre.

Introduction to the pros and cons of various light sources.

Contemporary shadow theatre and the shadow screen.

Fixed and moveable light sources.

Using the body - the physical challenges of contemporary shadow theatre.

Doing away with the screen - contemporary shadow theatre in the round: dramatic possibilities.

Experimentation individually, in pairs and in groups.

Technical, practical knowledge.

Using colour and texture: reflected and refracted light.

Outline programme:

1:00 - 1:20 - Intro and welcome. Housekeeping. Overview
1:20 - 2:00 - Experimentation with different light sources
2:00 - 3:00 - Exploring neutral, narrative and character-based uses of light
Includes overview of specialist skills needed in light manipulation for contemporary 
shadow theatre
3:00 - 3:15 - Short break
3:15 - 4:15 - Screen work - use of the body
4:15 - 4:45 - Exploring reflected and refracted light
4:45 - 5:00 - Short break
5:15 - 5:45 - Screen work - physical and spatial awareness work
5:45 - 6:45 - Open-ended session
6:45 - 7:00 - Feedback, evaluation and close
